Spicy Kohlrabi and Turnip Wedges (Low Carb)

Spicy Kohlrabi and Turnip Wedges (Low Carb)

If there is one thing I really miss while on a ketogenic diet, that is potato-based side-dishes. They have a taste that is really difficult to reproduce with the basic keto ingredients, but most of all I miss the texture of fried or baked potato wedges.

This side dish is simple enough but very flavorful. Turnips and kohlrabi are a really good replacement for potatoes and although they do not crisp up as well as potatoes, their taste is neutral. This makes them the perfect alternative in my take on "patatas bravas". Kohlrabi has about 2.5 grams net carbs for 100 grams, is very low in calories and is a great source of Thiamin, Phosphorus and Vitamins B6 and C. Turnips have about 5 gram net carbs for 100 grams and is a good source of Vitamin C and Potassium. The addition of garlic and chili, together with a splash of vinegar makes this dish a great side-dish for steak or lamb.

Ingredients

  • 130 g kohlrabi
  • 50 g turnip
  • 10 g garlic
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp red chili flakes
  • 2 tsp sweet paprika

Instructions

  • Peel the vegetables and cut into wedges.
  • In a mortar and pestle or a small food processor grind the garlic and salt into a paste. Add the paprika and chili flakes and mix into a paste.
  • Add the apple cider vinegar to the paste and mix well.
  • In the meantime, heat the coconut oil in a pan and fry the kohlrabi and the turnips. Try not to stir too much so that they get a bit of texture.
  • When the vegetables are cooked, add the paste and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Serve with garlic aioli.
